It can be an apt metaphor for the last year (or years) of life. It is the role of financial planners to advise their clients such that they have sufficient funds to pay for their needs until end of life. In today’s world, as people live longer, are less likely to have local family networks available to help with care, and as the cost of quality care grows at the same time the availability of societal safety nets shrinks, this role becomes even more critical. In this talk, I’ll share some important statistics on aging and the three pathways (Aging in Place at home; a planned move to a Continuing Care Retirement Community, or a move to a rental Assisted Living, Memory Care or Skilled Nursing in crisis) people tend to follow with their associated costs.  Along the way, I’ll share key stories from the hundreds of families I’ve worked with that might help seed ideas to improve a situation and hopefully, when a true storm hits, empower you to help steer your clients’ ship wisely.\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \nLIISA OGBURN\n \nOWNER & ELDER CONSULTANT\n \n \n \nRaised in North Carolina with deep roots in Finland, Liisa has a unique appreciation for diverse approaches to aging, shaped by having lived in Finland, Estonia, Germany, England, Japan, and Costa Rica.\n \nShe came to elder care through the doorway of personal experience. While teaching at Duke University and caring for her father-in-law and three young children, Liisa started sharing her family’s journey in The New York Times. She has written over 300 posts on issues related to aging for WRAL’s Aging Well.\n \nA teacher at heart, Liisa thrives on empowering others with knowledge. She offers her expertise in presentations—to churches, organizations, and professional firms—and writes extensively, reaching audiences far and wide.\n \n \n
